If Apple Made Custom Mechanical Keyboards - The MODE Experience
I always liked how MODE handled things in the custom mechanical keyboard space, here’s a video of me talking about it for 15min straight. This isn’t an ad, think of it more as fan mail. 😜

Hi, currently have a 2013 iMac 27" (on my left) and a 2015 iMac 5K 27" (straight ahead). I often 'connect' the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. My new job will force me to have a 'locked down' windows laptop (13" or 15") - likely to be placed on the right side of my desk. 1). I really want to be able to connect this 'locked down' windows laptop to my 5K iMac. Allowing me to switch between remote working and personal / home use. 2). And still be able to use the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. Being able to use speakers, webcam, mac wireless keyboard and mac trackpad. If that is not possible. 3). Could I replace the 2013 iMac with a Apple Studio Display (straight ahead) and still be able to connect both the iMac 5K (moved to the left) and this 'locked down' windows laptop to the Apple Studio Display. Any help would be really useful.

I feel weird, because the first thing I did when considering spending time and money customizing a keyboard for personalization, was grab a sample kit with 20+ different switches in it (mix of Outemu, Gateron and Kailh 'standards' at the time, with a singular example of a silent and speed linear for each brand as well) and had a hotswap compatible macro pad already laying around that could handle 5-pin layout for switches. After that I picked up a handful of different types of keycap, which was shockingly cheap, as I was just going for 'type' instead of 'BRAND' and used that to dial in my preferences on both switch type and keycap type. Because of budget concerns, I wound up going with outemu linears and a pre-assembled frame that I did some modding to to soften it's pinginess, as well as a cheap keycap set. I'm now using an 8bitdo retro, and have ordered in Kailh whales to replace the box whites it came with because they are just too loud for my needs, and the whales feel REALLY nice to me with how the tactile break is. I'm also planning on doing something a lot of people seem allergic to, and leaving some switches as box whites and others being replaced with whales.I don't plan on doing further mods to it than that, as it is very solid as-is. I'm customizing my board based on what I WANT, not based on what the internet has said is good. There is nothing wrong with not having a totally custom keyboard, or with not paying out the rear for 'holy grail' switches or caps. Brand tax is brand tax, regardless of item being bought, and the market as a whole is better off when people stop treating brand tax like it improves the tangible quality. The biggest consideration is to try out switches and cap types, because keyfeel is THE most important, but also subjective thing. Yes, some people really focus on sound, but outside of raw volume, it's not really that important. Remember the golden rule of everything: Perfect is impossible, but 'good enough' is amazing. In chasing perfection, you will never find it, so instead find something you know you like and can tolerate indefinitely. A big problem with mechanical keyboards as a hobby is the amount of elitism and moneyflashing newbies are presented with. There's also significant issue with people being quite judgy based purely on form factor. It doesn't matter if you think it looks or sounds bad, if it is someone else's keyboard. At most you should be asking them what they were going for and then givng advice with both that and the implied budget in mind, not just ranting about how X is better than Y because you like it better.

I love my Legion GO but haven’t used it as expected 😂😂😂. It’s final “win” over the deck for me to give it a try wasn’t so much the detachable controllers but that fps mode with the detached controller, I felt I would just learn to love that vertical mouse, but I hated it. Luckily I had a mini bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo I was trying out with my phone hoping it would help with light “laptop” work via my phone on the go (things like editing docs and replying to emails). I hated it, the phone screen was too small. Well guess what took that over with ease! Legion GO! Paired said bluetooth set with the legion go and got a carrying case that can hold it all. Worth every penny. I can play games using keyboard and mouse with ease and even do the doc editing I wanted on the GO with the same ease. Plus handheld mode.

I really liked the Ghostbar on my Halo65, so I got another one for my Keychron K6 Pro... and was immediately disappointed. I didn't realize it at the time, but one of the reasons for the improved sound dampening was the inclusion of these silicone strips attached to the board, and without them the Ghostbar's sound profile is more or less the same as any generic PBT spacebar. I did some testing with other spacebars and came to the conclusion that the Ghostbar and silicone inserts, used in conjunction, are what facilitate the vastly improved sound profile found on the Halo65. Not sure why they're not included with the spacebar itself, and of course they don't appear to be sold separately anywhere. I've tried looking for them, but the closest I've found are made from rubber (KPREPUBLIC Spacebar Plate Rubber Strip). Maybe those would work, but I haven't gotten the chance to test it yet. It's just such a let down though, since after using the Ghostbar on the Halo65, every other spacebar that I use just sounds wrong in comparison.

Some very good points. If there's a place to start - I'd suggest focus on layout, standard or low profile, volume level and whether you want QMK/VIA. To me the No 1 priority is wide keycaps and low profile on a keyboard that's 75% or thereabouts. Ergonomics and desk space. How little desk space it consumes really changes ergonomics - and I spend a lot of hours designing - so mouse in one hand and keyboard for shortcuts. I like low profile because it feels like my wrists are straining less too. Also, I can slip the keyboard in my macbook air bag which to me is much nicer than the mac keyboard. I have both linear and clicky switches I have a preference for quieter switches as the noise tends to make me try and rush - it's not necessary. Lastly, being able to make the keyboard do whatever you want in terms of layers, shortcuts, make the software conform to your habits has been a big thing for me. Remapping 8 or so adobe actions to the most logical left hand only shortcuts makes a huge difference in my workflow and even extended macros for saving work with settings that Adobe doesn't give you an action for is a lifesaver for me - others may not care. So for me it's low profile, 75%, VIA and make it reasonably quiet. Wireless is a nice to have - and yes, all my keyboards work well on bluetooth, cleaning a few cables off my desk. Discovering low profile keyboards after years of full size cherry's and even older was a big thing. My latest purchase - or should I say 3 purchases is the YK75 keyboard - I found it at under $30 with outemu blue switches and good enough keycaps for it to be a travel companion that can quickly get me to 90% of my comfort zone. No software or macros - and not exactly quiet either but a keyboard I can pull out and work reasonably quicky with. So even with preferences ranked, You can still make compromises in some situations that work - albeit as a backup.

The solution I plan on implementing soon (so this hasn’t been tested) is to have the Mac control everything, but on the Mac have Windows’ native Remote Desktop app to remote control my windows machine. Then have a DAS or NAS act as the main storage for both machines. That way there’s no funky cable and drivers haggling. If both of the computers are connected to a little network switch under the desk, the latency should be minimal. And that way when you leave with your MacBook, you still have access to your full work flow.

In many ways, Apple and Mode are similar. For instance, they do not mention new products at all until just before the official announcement. However, the communication process on Discord until the product is delivered can be considered an advantage unique to Mode. Given the nature of Custom mechanical keyboards, communication with users is truly important!

Those are waiting to get on the Geistmaschine ❤️. So glad you came out with these, didn’t know what to pair that jewel of a board with and when I saw the Modern Materials I was like “that’s it, that’s the one”. 🙂

I love Mode…and no longer use their boards. The sonnet was amazing. I loved it at first sight and preordered a rather pricy configuration of it. The build experience was wonderful, and the keyboard felt great. However, after a few months of use, I started having key repeat issues. The Mode Discord described various things to double check on the PCB, and I found none of those things were wrong. Ultimately, I discovered it was a known fault of the Sonnet PCB to repeat key presses upon waking from sleep on macOS. A workaround firmware was provided in a difficult-to-find Mode Discord forum post, but it disabled the ability to use the keyboard in a certain way, I believe waking a Mac from sleep. I shelved my Sonnet after one-too-many Zoom calls where I hit the volume up key and had to panic unplug my keyboard before the key repeating sent my volume to max…I hope to revisit Mode products one day, but the PCB flaw soured me on the company. I moved onto the Frog TKL 8K. It’s a nice board, but I’ve had a number of issues using QMK on it that have required me to DM with the PCB designer. That’s a far cry from the smooth experience of Mode’s board even if said Frog PCB designer is quite nice and helpful.
